Academic Research

In her academic work, Laurentia has studied the effects of stress on the gut microbiota, the effects of plant, herb, and spices, plant polyphenols (the bioactive part of plants) on anxiety, depression, and cognition. She has also researched the effects of omega-3's on minimizing the effects of stress on the blood-brain-barrier and the role of insulin-sensitizing plants and herbs on stress resilience and cognitive performance.

She has worked in gut microbiota labs, with polyphenols and her focus has always been on the effects of food on mental health and brain cognition as well as the environmental impact of foods. She presented her personal research on the "effects of plant polyphenols on mental health" this year at the May 2024 Nutrition Society Polyphenols symposium and is a regular at the Integrative and Personalised Medicine Conferences.

Personal Life

She is a gardener and plant lover, with a growing potted plant garden in her small London flat that she shares with Daisy. She is a yoga teacher and avid dog walker, with an obsessive passion for helping the planet, stopping nutritional inequality, and feeding the hungry. She spends her time with her family, friends and community, in her garden, walking, doing zumba or yoga, singing in her choir, forensically researching nutrition and writing.
